So, it's the rockband from Birmingham's third album again, and, immediatly, I double-check the artist name.
Yes, it's The Editors, THE Editors.
Then, Tom Smith and a second voice appear. That's how I know them.
After reading on their official site about their new album, it all makes more sense.
"Bassist Russell Leech and guitarist Chris Urbanowicz are now resident in New York whilst singer Tom Smith has become a father. These changes added to the sense that ‘In This Light And On This Evening’ was the start of a new chapter for Editors and the band came together in London for the recording sessions with producer Flood at the start of 2009 with a determination to push their sound into wholly new territory. Whilst all four members were keen to make a far more electronic record, they were determined to ‘give the machines a human feel’ in the words of lead singer Tom Smith."
Maybe they were getting sick of the audience comparing them with the likes of Joy Division, Interpol, The Chameleons.
Tho having a different sound and wanting to explore the rest of the ways of making music, the songs still sounds like The Editors how they we're before this album, which is NOT a bad thing. Yes the synthesizers are a total different thing but it is refreshing to me.
The second song (Bricks and Mortar) also got the climax moments which make the songs feel like a emotional travel inwards.
THEN, Papillon, which is a high energy song with a emotional rush, which to me gives an effect which "Racing rats" and "Bones" gave me as well.
With other songs they continue making the electronic music with a "mortal" voice combination of which after excessive use of the entire album still does not get tiring.
I enjoyed the first two albums since start until today and I will continue doing this, tho this album, sounding totally different but still not, will be a big switch, maybe one which commercially was needed for some, because The Editors was close to a one-tune band. A tune which, I would never get tired of listening to fortunately.
In the Light and on this Evening is indeed a new chapter. It's like taking a peppermint with a slight different flavor or texture. You're used to it, but still it's refreshingly different and welcome. If you did not like The Editors yet, now you should.
